Galle District, Sri Lanka

  • Circa 1840 - 1860
    102 x 62 x 51 cms

A carved Ebony chair, with a caned seat and back. The shape of this chair is extremely unusual and we do not know of another like this.

The top rail is ornately carved with flowers and foliage. The canned seat and the back are connected making a concave shape.

The front seat rail is carved with foliage. The front legs are carved with elongated leaves and are raked. The rear legs, of square section, are also moderately raked and are shorter than the front legs, so that the seat inclines.
