Tom Young     |   Paintings Inspired by Lebanon      4th June - 21st June   2008

Tom Young has been commissioned to paint landscapes in Lebanon, Syria, Israel, India, Morocco, Majorca, Italy, France and America, as well as in Britain. His work has been bought for the private collections of the Mellon collection in America, the Moutran family in Beirut, the Allen and Overy collection and the RAC Club in London.

Tom has exhibited in galleries in London, New York, Philadelphia, and in South West France.

"I am particularly passionate about Lebanon, having worked there twice in 2006. I am returning to work there in 2008 for the forthcoming exhibiition. By painting the extraordinary richness and beauty of the place, I aim to show how precious it is. In another way, this may alert people to the tragedy of what maybe lost if more care isn't taken to preserve and protect it.

The patchwork of different cultures, religions and languages also makes Lebanon a magical place. It is full of contradictions. It is beautiful and fun, yet is fragile and troubled. There are elements of east and west, yet it remains completely unique.

Having trained as an architect, I am interested in the expression of light and space. I use varying degrees of densely layered oil paint to create a textured, sensual surface. Capturing a sense of multi layered history through the depiction of different architectural styles fascinates me. I aim to express the soul of a place through my paintings of places and the people who live there.

I worked in Beirut before and after the conflict in 2006. This painting is a response to what I witnessed  happening  to that city. In this building I saw both destruction and hope. The symbolism of the fallen cross and the light of the crescent moon clouded by the smoke of a bomb do not diminish the indomitable spirit of that city. Beirut has been subjected to many horrors in the last fifty years. But the spirit of the people in Beirut is undimmed. They find within themselves the courage and enterprise to rise like the Phoenix and recreate their city again and again."
