Novin Malik   |   King of the Road, Truck Art from Pakistan        6th July - 16th July   2011

Artist's Statement:

I am a miniaturist from Lahore, Pakistan and I graduated with a Masters in Fine Arts from the National College of Arts (NCA). NCA previously known as the Mayo School of Arts, is the last remaining art school in the world today that offers Miniature Painting as a specialization. After graduating I have been one of the few miniaturists working to continue practicing this form of specialist Art.

Over the last few years I have used these traditional skills to create works that explore questions of veiling, gender, child abuse, women's rights. My work, for quite some time, has found inspiration in the current issues facing society and my paintings have been a vehicle to promote them.

My latest works have explored the political issues facing the Asian Sub continent and have gone to the roots of Asian culture to capture the feelings of the ordinary people, manifesting itself in what is called 'truck art'. The tradition of painting trucks in the Asian sub continent is long and colourful. It started out as a way for truck drivers to take reminders of home with them on long journeys, and over the years drivers have used everything from wood, metal, jangling chains, shiny objects and even three dimensional creations to decorate their trucks. The art takes the form of paintings, philosophical phrases and poetry and together create a unique insight into the current issues that affect the 'ordinary person'.

My current paintings have tried to highlight some of these issues in a satirical way using these cultural 'truck art' techniques combined with the finess of miniaturism.

Through my work I am trying to represent that section of our society whose views should matter the most but are listened to least.
